Including this duplicate with writing on it. This helps identify some of the people in the photo. The really old man is "Gross Papa Hietter". To his left is his daughter, Veronica. Standing behind her is her husband, Adam Gilles. They were parents of 5 children including my grandmother, Veronica B. Gilles who is standing on far left with her twin sister, Mary. They are wearing identical dresses. "Top 3 boys are Ed, John and Wm. Gilles". I'm unsure which ones she's referring to. . . Also, identifies someone in photo as Annie Hieter Weaver who was daughter of Aunt Bridget, but I'm not sure which one in the photo is Annie.

Narrative Biography

From: German Family History, by Fr. Ambrose German (written early 1960's)

"Basilius German was born on June 14, 1826, in Baden, Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Germann. He received his education in his native land, and learned the trade of cloth weaving. In 1847, he came to America to seek his future. The story goes that he was intending to marry in Germany, but that his girl friend and he got into an argument. For spite, she got on the next ship to America. He followed her on the next ship, and they met in the strange land where neither of them could speak English and neither had any friends. Overjoyed at seeing someone whom each knew, they made up and got married!

For more thoughts on the political and economic pressures the family would have been under to leave Germany at this time, see the bio for Basilius's father Frank.)...

He was united in marriage to Gertrude Sager in Buffalo, NY, in 1847. She was also born in Baden, Germany, on March 17, 1828. She received her education in her native land, and came to America in 1847, arriving in Boston.

Mr. and Mrs. German at first lived in Buffalo, New York, where he conducted a six loom shop for weaving cloth. Later he purchased ten acres near Niagara Falls and farmed till 1952. At that time, he wanted to join the gold rush, but his wife refused. Some friends, Streitmatter by name, talked them into going to Princeville, Illinois. Here he gradually acquired 160 acres north of Princeville. The place is still known as the Old German Farm.

In those early days, there was no Catholic Church nearer than Kickapoo, and so Mr. German often would walk the 18 miles to mass. He would take with him a basket of eggs, either as a price for the night's lodging, or for the Church. Mrs. German was known as a kind and obliging lady, with a great heart and a cheerful word for everyone. Both had to work hard to carve out a home for themselves and their family. After many years on the farm, they retired to Princeville, where they celebrated their golden wedding on February 15, 1898.

Mr. German passed away on June 20, 1904, at the age of 78 years and 6 days. He was laid to rest in St. Mary Cemetery, Princeville.

Mrs. German lived on till July 9, 1910, having reached the age of 82 years and 3 months. Paralysis was the immediate cause of her death; her health had been good until a very short time before her death. Her funeral was one of the most largely attended funerals held in Princeville. She, too, was buried in St. Mary Cemetery, Princeville, Illinois."

From: Past And Present Of Platte County, Volume II

"Bacillius and Gertrude (Sager) German … were natives of Baden. [Basilius] was a cloth weaver by trade and in 1847 crossed the Atlantic to the new world, settling in Buffalo, New York, where he conducted a six-loom shop, devoting some time to the weaving of cloth. Later he purchased ten acres of land near Niagara Falls and carried on farming until 1852, when he left the Empire state and removed to Peoria county, Illinois, where he again engaged in farming. He first purchased sixty acres, to which he afterwards added a twenty-acre tract and still later bought eighty acres more, so that his farm comprised one hundred and sixty acres. The property is still in possession of the family. Both he and his wife passed away at Princeville, Illinois, to which place they removed when Mr. German retired from active farm life."

German attended school in Stark county, Illinois, and remained upon the home farm until he reached the age of twenty-two years, when he began farming on his own account in Peoria county, Illinois. The first land that he ever owned was a tract of eighty acres which he cultivated from 1871 until 1885. He then sold out and removed to Platte county, Nebraska, on the 28th of November, 1885, establishing his home in Burrows township, where he purchased two hundred acres. He lived upon that farm on section 2 for eighteen years and carefully developed and improved the place, which in 1903 he traded for two hundred and forty acres of land on section 4, Grand Prairie township. He removed to that farm and is living there today. He cultivates it all with hired help, carrying on general agricultural pursuits and also making stockraising a feature of his business. He feeds both cattle and hogs and also breeds a good grade of stock. In 1905 he erected a new residence and he has a farm equipped with many excellent improvements and modern accessories. Aside from his farming interests he is a shareholder in the Farmers' Elevator Company of Humphrey.

On the 16th of November, 1869, Mr. German was united in marriage to Miss Elizabeth Messing, a daughter of Matthew and Elizabeth Messing, both of whom were natives of Germany. Emigrating to the United States, they took up their abode near Peoria, Illinois, and there purchased a farm on which they spent the remainder of their lives. To Mr. and Mrs. German have been born the following children: Gertrude, who is deceased; Katie, who is the wife of George Fehringer, a farmer of Grand Prairie township; Mary, the wife of Joseph Fehringer, who is engaged in the livery business at Rockville, Minnesota; Bacillius, who wedded Miss Annie Wemhoff and follows farming in Grand Prairie township; Margaret, who gave her hand in marriage to William Bender, an agriculturist of Granville township; Christina, who is the wife of Frank Ternus, a farmer of Humphrey township; Barbara, who is the wife of William Braun, a merchant of Humphrey; Matthias, who wedded Miss Annie Braun and is an agriculturist of North Dakota; Leo, who married Miss Annie Hamling and follows farming in Humphrey township; Eddie, who is at home with his parents; and a daughter who died in infancy. Mr. German has fifty living grandchildren and three are deceased.

Politically Mr. German is a democrat and has served as road supervisor of Burrows township for eighteen years, a fact which is certainly indisputable proof that he has been a capable and efficient officer. He belongs to St. Mary's Catholic church of Grand Prairie township, of which he has served as a trustee, and he is a member of St. Joseph's Men's Society of that church. For thirty years he has lived in Platte county and throughout the entire period has been identified with its farming interests. He has never been afraid of hard work and his close application and persistency of purpose have been salient features in winning for him the success which is today his."

From: German Family History, by Fr. Ambrose German:

Frank German, the oldest of the eleven children of Basilius German and Gertrude Sager, was born on February 12, 1849 at
Buffalo, New York, where his Father was conducting a six loom shop for weaving cloth. The family soon moved to a farm
near Niagara Falls, but in 1852, the family went to Stark County, Illinois to take up farming. It was in the local school there
that young Frank received his education, and then helped his father farm until he reached the age of 22. He also worked for
a short time in the coal mines on his father's farm, and for 3 months helped build the railroad which ran nearby. At the age of 22, he began to farm for himself in Peoria County, Illinois.
By that time he had married Elizabeth Messing. The ceremony took place on November 16, 1869 in his parents' home near Princeville, since there was no Catholic Church nearby. A priest came from some distance for this occasion, since it was to be a double wedding. Frank's sister Fredericka was married at the same time to George Heinz.
Mr. German owned 80 acres in Peoria County which he farmed from 1871 to 1885. He sold this land, and on November 28,
1885 he moved with his family to Nebraska, where he bought 200 acres in Burrows Township. He traded this land in 1903
for 240 acres in Grand Prairie Township, just east of St. Mary Church. In 1905 he erected a fine house on this property. He
was a feeder of cattle and hogs, a shareholder in the Farmers' Elevator Company of Humphrey, and served as road supervisor of Burrows Township for 18 years, and was a trustee of St. Mary Church.

Mr. and Mrs. German farmed for many years before they retired to Humphrey, Nebraska. It was here that Mrs. German died on December 22, 1928. Mr. German lived on in Humphrey for 4 more years, and then made his home with his son, Leo. He
died on January 20, 1941, one of the oldest men in the Community.

Narrative Biography

Eulogy for Jane L. Froussard at First United Methodist Church of Webster Groves, Missouri. Memorial Service Saturday, September 01, 2012 at 10:00 am By Gail Rimkus-Appel, grand daughter (1st grandchild born, ooh yeah)

My grandma, Jane Froussard, was a very special person who had a great impact on all our lives. We all have great and fond memories of her and will never forget her. She taught all us many things throughout her 87 years with us. She always lived her life to the fullest. My grandma did many things throughout her life. I want to encourage you to participate (and/or start doing) these things in order to have a full life, such as my grandma. Here are a few things that I (and hopefully you too) learned from my grandma:
1. Don't be afraid to love. My grandma was lucky in love, twice. She was happily married to Don Miller (who unfortunately passed away during World War II) and Virgil Froussard, my grandpa. She always had kindness, compassion, and affection for both of these men.
2. Dance. My always grandma loved a good tune to shake her tale feather, too. I will never forget being whisked and twirled around the living room with my grandma. Also, my grandparents belonged to a dance group for years and would always step out dressed to the 9s once a month and go around to the different country clubs in the St. Louis area. It was the highlight of the month.
3. Sing. My grandma sang in various competitions when she has a child with her siblings. Her love for singing was carried on throughout her life because I remember singing Christmas Carols into the wee hours of the night with her. Later in her life, she would frequently have the radio turned up with some classic country music and would always be humming a tune when people stopped by.
4. Learn to play an instrument. My grandma loved to play her baby grand piano that my grandfather gave her as a birthday present. She could always tickle the ivories even when she was sick in bed. She always loved a good piano tune.
5. Put your own version of the pronunciation of words to make a statement. My grandma always had her own pronunciation for a word. So when you see my mother, Michelle, later on today be sure to call her “Me-shell” like my grandma did.
6. Get the 411 (information) on everyone you meet. Before my grandma would conduct business with you she always needed to know the following information: Where were you born? Where do you live? Do you have any children? How long have you been working here? She did this in order to start up a conversation because she loved to talk and interact with people.
7. Laugh. Life is too serious. Laughter is the best way to get through difficult times. My grandma was always laughing. In fact, I am sure she is laughing at me, now, and whispering in my ear to hurry up and finish this crazy eulogy.
8. Eat, Drink, and be Merry. My grandma always would say that she “could eat like a truck driver” and she could probably drink anybody under the table. Her favorite drink for the record was scotch and water and then bourbon and water.
9. Get involved in the community. She was a founding member of the Webster Groves Herb Society. At the church she was a member of the quilting group and former choir member. She was a community volunteer taking the sick to doctor visits. She also volunteered at Mary Queen and Mother.
10. Don't be afraid to talk politics. My grandma was a proud Democrat and my grandfather was an opinionated Republican. Lets just table this conversation now.
11. Travel. She went to many places throughout her live. She honeymooned in Mexico. My grandma, grandpa, and mother would frequently make a yearly pilgrimage “Eagle Hurst Ranch”. She went to Portugal with my grandpa to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary.
12. Pray. She would attend church every Sunday in her best attire. Later in life, she was not physically able to attend but she would always attend every Sunday in spirit.
13. Be close and always available to friends and family. She would light up when she was surrounded in the company of friends and family. She would drop everything to talk, chat, or visit with us. Sometimes burning dinner but it was well worth it.
14. Give to others in need. She gave to many charities and family members during times of need. Some of her favorite charities were: Feed My People, The USO, Shalom House, First United Methodist Church “Feed the Fishes” campaign. I also remember her sending financial assistance to her niece who was battling cancer. She would always offer to pay for doctor's bills and medicine when any family member got sick. She would never want us to worry because she just wanted us to get well.
15. Smile and always have a kind ear and word to say. No matter what was going on she would always stop and listen to you. She would never want anyone to be sad. She would always smile and listen. She would always offer encouraging words that always made the situation seem not as bad.
16. Celebrate and Party. My grandma loved and lived for parties. Most holidays, birthdays, block parties, and special occasions were always initiated and planned by her. She always wanted people to be happy and celebrate life.

So grandma, we celebrate you today. My family and I would like to invite you all for a little reception after the memorial service in honor of my grandma. We look forward to meeting and seeing you all. Thank you.
