Narrative Biography

1895, Peter and Gertrude (Heinz) Knecht bought an acre of land at Leonore, LaSalle Co., IL, and a home was built on it. Mr. Knecht worked as a carpenter at 30 cents an hour. In 1900 they moved to Dunlap, IL, on a farm where Mr. Knecht cut coal props the first year, and farmed the land for 12 years. They then sold out, bought a hotel in Dunlap and kept roomers. Mr. Knecht also worked as a carpenter for 50 cents an hour. In June, 1922, they quit the hotel business because Mr. Knecht's health failed.
