Narrative Biography

Nicholas Hoffman Sr. came to the United States in 1853 with his family. They sailed from Bremen and had a very long and stormy passage, being on the water nearly three months. At the end of this journey they landed in New York and came at once to Illinois, locating at Peoria. Here they remained the first winter and the father worked with his brother-in-law. In the spring he engaged in farming for himself, renting a farm near Peoria and there continued for eight years. At the expiration of that time he purchased one hundred and sixty acres of wild prairie land in Peoria county, called Pottstown, and this he improved and put under cultivation, creating a good and substantial home and erected a comfortable house. Here he continued until his death, which occurred when he was sixty-eight years of age.
His wife Anna died when she was ninety years of age, in 1899, in Macon county, Illinois. Nicholas was one of five children born to his parents and the third in order of birth. Five of these children are still living. Nicholas Hoffman was a Democrat in politics and both parents were members of the Catholic church.

Narrative Biography

Mr. Hoffman was first employed as an ice cutter on the Illinois River. The country around was mainly owned by Indians and Mr. Hoffman witnessed the growth of the United States from the last period of Indian warfare, during the Civil War, through World War I, and into the early years of the second great European conflict beginning in 1939.

Living to the age of 97, his experiences as a living part of progressive America were numerous and interesting, and he thrilled his great-grandchildren with tales out of the past.

At intervals during the trip from Peoria to Maroa, farmers would come out of their homes to investigate the "strangers," with guns to the shoulder, thinking that perhaps the travelers were belligerent Indians.

Later in his lifetime, Mr. Hoffman owned a number of farms, in Idaho, where he took up a claim, in Iowa, and Illinois. He also moved to Long Beach California with his second wife.

"When three weeks old, he came with his parents to Illinois. They made the entire trip by water, settling near Princeville in Stark County. it was here that he received his education, and then helped with the work on the farm. When 18 years of age, he went to Kickapoo, Illinois, where he was an apprentice in the wagon making trade. He completed his apprenticeship with the firm of Hoope and Foltz in Peoria.

Mr. and Mrs. German came to Princeville, Illinois in 1875, where he openend a wagon and blacksmithing shop under the name of German and Gillen. He later purchased an interest in a hardware business and operated that business in connection with his other business. In 1890, he sold an interest in his business to J.S. Friedman and the firm operated under the name of German and Friedman for 30 years.

Mrs. German died in 1920, and was buried in St. Mary Cemetery, Princeville, Illinois.

That same year Mr. German retired from his business. A sister of his wife, Miss Annie Heinz, kept house for him for the next 15 years. She later retired to St. Francis Hospital in Peoria.
