George Heinz II was the third son of George Heinz Sr. and Kathrine (Henlein) Heinz. He was born March 10, 1845. He was married Nov. 16, 1869 to Fredericka German. She was born July 8, 1850, at Buffalo, New York. Their wedding took place in the home of her parents near Princeville, Ill., since at that time there was no church in the vicinity. A priest came from Kickapoo and married them. (It was a humble wedding, as the bride’s brother, Frank German, was wed to Elizabeth Messing at the same time.)
George Heinz lived all of his life within ten miles of where he was born. He was a prosperous farmer and invented the first potato planter and the first potato bug catcher. He raised many potatoes in his early farming and raised and fed many hogs each year. He was a church director for several terms and a staunch Democrat all his life. He was the Township road maintenance overseer for many years. He was also Township Commissioner for two terms. He put the first gravel on the highway in Illinois for a pavement. Then came the State gravel road, then the State concrete road. His first drain on his land was four boards nailed in a square to drain off surplus water on his land. The box-like drain was laid underground so he could farm over it. It was successful.
George Heinz owned 1,410 acres of land at his death. He and his wife lived together in the same house for 57 years. They celebrated their Silver Wedding on Nov. 16, 1894 with a big gathering and a church ceremony. Then they were privileged to celebrate their Golden Wedding anniversary on Nov. 16, 1919.
Mr. Heinz died with pneumonia on Jan. 22, 1926. His wife lived a little over three years longer in the same house. She died with diabetes on July 25, 1929. They are buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery at Kickapoo. They were lifelong faithful Catholics.
